The cost of holidays
Last week I highlighted just how much some costs for travellers have plummeted over the past 10 to 20 years. Air fares, in particular, are much lower, but other important expenses such as car hire, insurance and DoverCalais ferry fares have also dropped sharply.
Now it is time for the bad news. In many areas, the price of travel has increased well above the rate of inflation. Hotels, petrol, ferry fares on less competitive routes and some rail fares in Britain show some of the most significant rises. I have picked out some examples from my own experience, and some which have been sent to me by readers.
